ELISHA COX ART
ABOUT ME:
Working with sculptural installations, I focus my practice on how fat is perceived in the 21st century from a young western females’ perspective. Focusing on this topic during the last three years has allowed me to evolve in my professional practice and develop the work to where I am today.
Growing up in a western society which is prejudice toward the larger body, I have always felt lost in my own body. As Tovar states in her book, ‘You have the right to remain fat.’, “We were not born thinking fat is bad and thin is good. We learn these things through an ongoing cultural education” (2018, Pg. 18). As Tovar writes above fat is never something which we are born with an initial natural response too, therefore in my practice I am hoping that through experiencing my work my viewers may be able to see the larger body and the word fat in a different perspective.
Concentrating on artists such as Antony Gormley, Sarah Lucas and Ernesto Neto I am beginning to explore how space, the body, and body fat can interlink and create an open immersive experience for the viewer within a gallery space. I wish to continue with the work I am currently producing where I am using a combination of flour and tights to form a resemblance to the feeling of fat when touched and aesthetically body parts of a body in which can give many insecurities; such as bellies, arms, genitals, breasts and so forth.
